OUR COMMUNITY:
SOUTH GATE / LA COUNTY
Before we actually had the idea of helping the homeless in our community, we had meetings to discuss what we wanted to focus on this year. We each did research to identify a big problem in our community. After various days of presenting our research to our teammates, we came to the conclusion that homelessness was a big issue in our community, which is why this year our mission was to build a bridge that connects the needs to the resources they may need. We live in a poor community where people live in poverty and there's not enough jobs to go around. When teams would practice at the riverbed for Students Run LA or Cross Country they would constantly come across a lot of homeless families or people and would have to just cancel the practice due to the fact that they were being put at risk. We as a team wanted to help make a difference and help those in need, not only to help the homeless but to be able to allow others to feel safe in their own community.
